Advice & Tips on putting a CV Together

Putting a CV together is a daunting task, especially when it plays such an important part in being a successful candidate when applying for a job role.

There a few basic tips that every individual should follow when putting together their CV, which will be explained below.

The first thing to understand when writing a CV is what to include in the content, once this is understood it should be easier to start writing it.

The content of your CV should include the following:

  • Personal details – name, address, phone numbers & email.
  • Education – explain briefly what qualifications you have such as GCSE’s A-levels, degree and where these were achieved.
  • Work experience – starting with the most recent work experience first. Briefly describe what the job role was, what your main responsibilities were and the qualities you achieved from working there.
  • Skills – include specific skills you have such as IT skills and communication.
  • Hobbies – this should only be a brief part of your CV, but by including your interests outside of the working environment it will give employers a better idea of the type of person you are.
  • References – it is usual to provide the name and contact details of two referees who will be able to provide references for you, this should be your most recent employer or a lecturer, teacher or manager on work experience. Remember to tell your referees in advance so that they are prepared.

Once the content of your CV is filled, there are some useful tips to make your CV stand out from others. These include:

  • Quality not quantity is key, there is no need to for huge paragraphs in your CV just ensure that relevant information is included. Any CV should be a maximum of two pages long.
  • All CV’s should be clear and tidy, making it easier to follow. Simplicity is essential, black ink and white paper should be used. Colours and a variety of fonts and styles is not needed to make it stand out from other applicants.
  • Tailor your CV for the particular job you are applying for, this can be done by adding specific skills and experience that relate to the job. However, don’t just rely on your CV make sure you also stand out as a person and present yourself well if offered an interview.
  • Where possible, use figures. For example, if you managed to increase sales at a previous job, state how much by.
  • Ensure your CV is kept up to date with relevant and current information.
  • Finally, avoid errors. Make sure that your CV has been proof read and that there are no spelling or grammar mistakes. If an employer notices mistakes on your CV, this will be an easy excuse to not consider you for the job.
